Why Fibre is the Most Underrated Nutrient in the Indian Diet

If someone told you that a single nutrient could improve your digestion, reduce your risk of heart disease, help regulate blood sugar, lower colorectal cancer risk, support weight management, and feed the beneficial bacteria that influence your immunity and mental health you would expect that nutrient to be the centrepiece of nutritional conversations.

The fibre gap in India

What fibre actually does

Fibre is the collective term for plant-based carbohydrates that human digestive enzymes cannot break down. Rather than being absorbed as nutrients, fibre passes through the small intestine and performs its most important work in the large intestine.

Populations with high dietary fibre intake consistently have lower obesity rates.

Where the fibre gap comes from

The maida takeover: Refined wheat flour has dramatically replaced whole grain flours in Indian kitchens. Maida contains less than 2g of fibre per 100g, compared to 12–15g in whole wheat atta, 12g in ragi flour, and 10g in jowar flour.

White rice as the staple: White rice contains approximately 0.5g of fibre per 100g. Brown rice contains 3.5g. Red rice or hand-pounded rice even more. The shift to polished white rice across India has removed a significant fibre source from the traditional diet.

Reduced dal and legume consumption: As affluence increases, many Indian families have reduced their dal consumption viewing it as a poverty food while increasing meat and processed food consumption. Dal is one of India's most important fibre sources.

Fruit juice over whole fruit: A glass of orange juice delivers 20g of sugar and effectively zero fibre. An orange delivers 4g of fibre and 10g of naturally occurring sugar that's absorbed more slowly.

Packaged snacks over traditional whole food snacks: The displacement of roasted chana, groundnuts, fresh fruit, and cut vegetables by packaged biscuits, chips, and namkeen has removed significant fibre from the snacking habit.

How to close the fibre gap

You don't need to overhaul your entire diet. Strategic additions and swaps produce significant results:
